WITSML was initially developed by the WITSML project, an oil industry initiative sponsored by BP and Statoil, and later by Shell, as a new standard for drilling information transfer. Initial participation is from the major service companies Baker Hughes, GeoQuest, Halliburton, Landmark and Schlumberger. As of the completion of WITSML V1.2 in March 2003, POSC (now called Energistics) has custody of WITSML and is managing the support and future evolution of WITSML through the WITSML Special Interest Group. The aim of the WITSML standard is:
The “right time” seamless flow of well site data between operators and service companies to speed and enhance decision-making.
All industry organizations interested in WITSML are invited to join the WITSML SIG.
WITSML Version 1.3.1 (bug-fix) Released |
A bug-fix version of the WITSML 1.3.1 Data Schema Specification has been released. The 1.3.1 API is unchanged.

The tutorial introduces the mechanics of the WITSML Store interface in terms of SOAP requests and XML transforms which can be entered at the command line. The sample implementation is a 'thin client' for accessing data in WITSML servers. It provides a product-neutral means to exercise, debug, and validate client/server interactions from the client side, and to evaluate interoperability between server implementations. |
